oil leak

my caponord 1200 has 10.000 kms now.
I was on a trip in France, Alsace region, and there started an oil leak.
I don't now exactly where the oil is comming from. Somewhere under the gastank, at the side of the left hand. I don't think its comming from the head of one of the cilinders.

Has anyone expirienced the same problem?

So I found the problem.
the crankcase or krankshaft sends air to the airbox (just a little bit)
While he does that, with each blow, there is a little oil that comes with the air up into the airbox. After a while it is so much oil that the oil finds a way out of the airbox.
The dealer told me that this is "normal" because off factory the bike was procduced with a system that is quite not good enough and needs to be replaced under warrenty.
There was a recall to prefent this kinds of problems.
I bought mine in second-hand. I supposer thet the previous owner never took use of the recall.

There is also a recall for the ECU, to let the bike run "softer" below 3500 rpm

HI

I have the same problem on mine
An oil leak (a little) every day since i bought it in 2013 november
The dealer says it's normal but i received a letter by piaggio italia said that it was a problem about oil/air and they take it in warrenty.
So today my caponord is out of order, doesn't start and oil is empty...
I bring it today to the dealer ans i wait and see what he will answer....
Give you some news later !
thanks for your post

hi Guinters,

in the meantime I discoverd that the oil currently in the bike is 10w40.
The dealer told me that it is not a good oil. 10w40 is to thin. It needs 15w50.
That is wath is pescripted for a caponord 1200.
He maybe could have right.
So tommorow (15/05/2014) I will change the opil and put 15w50 in it. I hope that this solves the problem.
I must say that the bike runs perfectly except the oil that is drippin' out off the airbox.

I Ride: Caponord 1200
On a trip from London round Spain and have been plagued by this oil leak. Dealer in Peterborough, England said that he had fitted a recall part but a large pool of oil under the bike every morning is a little worrying. Aprillia dealer in Toulouse emptied the air box for me and topped up oil again as had lost so much. Speaking to dealer at home he said to only fill half way between marks but in Toulouse he say always to the top mark. Oil is 10/50.
Anyone had any success getting rid of this problem?

My 2013 capo has the same problem, is the 15w50 definitely the answer before I spend a lot of money for the dealer to tell me the same thing!!

G'day bigtwin. I have a 2014 build TP which I bought in 2015. It now has 29,430kms up and it uses 100cc/1000km of oil.

I have run various grades of oil, but I used only semi-synthetic in the initial 20,000kms before changing to full syn.

I used 15w50, tried 20w50, and at 15,000kms put Motul 10w50 5100 in. I think the engine just uses more oil up till 15,000kms as it takes forever to fully run in and seal up.

You can't go wrong with 15w50, but I recommend Motul 5100 with a change every 5,000kms or if you can afford it M300v 15w50.....that's good stuff that will go 10,000kms if your motor is fully run in and ready for the best of the best full synth oil.

I'm about to book in for my 30,000km service if it will stop raining on weekends and let me do the last 450kms........ I will try Motul 7100 20w50 (currently using M7100 10w60 which is also very good for fully run-in motors).

If your airbox is filling up with oil it will have nothing to do with 10w40 etc - there was a recall for an airbox mod that I have read about on the 2014-16 forum.

One last point - be very accurate with oil level checks - there are a lot of wankers arguing about technique, but if you put your Capo on the centre stand AFTER a proper ride, you will get an accurate hot oil level reading after 3-5mins. This should be between the marks, but usually closer to the top mark (in fact right on the max mark after a service!).

Hope this helps - it is possible the guys have been tricked into overfilling the big lump, so always hot check on the same level spot after a long ride......

Cheers for that, my capo has only 4000 on it. I'm just glad to hear it's a regular thing and nothing serious. I'm in Ireland and there's no aprilia dealers here I bought mine 2nd hand from uk so hopefully my local general bike mechanic will fix it !!

Cheers Bigtwin and others,

Have a look at the 2014-16 forum if you are thinking of changing or fiddling with anything.......it has become a bit of a monster but you can use the search function to find a lot of the work that has already been done by many owners.

Also you might avoid some problems if you are thinking of messing with the electronics.......

The full workshop manual is a very helpful addition to any home mechanic's library (it is 16Mb) and there is another manual which tells how to take the body work off.......but I missed out on that one, and, I haven't bothered to go where I'm not trained to go ..

I have no problems changing oil and filters in between the scheduled warranty services.......but you will need to be very alert if you are removing wheels as there are delicate ABS sensor wires that can be damaged if you're not looking....
