First service info

I have just bought a Caponord which has 300km on it. I got this from a bike shop which caters for every brand except Aprilia. We donít currently have a dealer where I live. Are there any restrictions, etc that have to be removed during the first service (rev limits, etc) by an authorised dealer or can the local bike shop look after it? Any help appreciated.

G'day CK16,

From memory your 1st service is the 1000km check up. I recommend you insist on using semi synthetic oil as these motors take forever to wear in properly (best to use Motul 5100 15w50). Your motor may use oil - mine went from top oil mark to below lower mark by 1000kms but no oil light so it still had 3ltrs in the sump and I didn't top it up before getting the 1000k service).

You will notice the oil goes black within a 1000-2000kms for many months, ignore the colour (it bothered me but it turns out to be the engine needing 12-15,000kms to fully seal up). Same goes for the brake and clutch fluids.....they go black from seal discolouration - not engine heat!. This is common to Ducati's and Aprilia.

The Aprilia will need to be connected to the PADS system for diagnostics and the exhaust valve cannot be set/checked without PADS. Most fit the healtech ESE and leave the valve fully open.

I used to change the oil at 5000kms rather than 10,000k's as it is cheap insurance and my TP was running fine at 39,000kms when I turned to the darkside (KTM1290GT).

You've taken a bit of a gamble with Aprilia...... dealership network was trimmed by the new importer (Peter Stevens Group) when the old importer (John Sample Group) sold out so John Sample could retire.

Hopefully your local guys can get access to info & tooling...... make sure they know the Capo12 only takes 3.4Ltrs of oil too...... and pre charge the oil filter (though I dry fitted mine until I found out you could precharge without spilling oil while fitting).

Your next big service will be at 10,000km (check airfilter, oil change, brake fluids etc) and the really major service is at 20,000kms (coolant, valves etc).

Try to download the workshop manuals if the shop has no training on Aprilia's.

These things are technically complex...... but really nice to ride .......... anything comes loose when new = loctite and forget.....

Could be worthwhile to check if any recalls are outstanding - there was a brembo recall for a replacement plunger (a 10min job), and possibly a check of the drive sprocket tension (which you should change from 17Teeth to 16Teeth without hesitation..... trust me.....it makes the bike a dream to ride), and if your fuel gauge plays up on ethanol fuels (I used only 95 octane non ethanol) get the Aprilia warranty new fuel sender unit (regardless of how old your bike is - it's covered).

cheers - and sneak over to the AF1 forum (2014-2017) - there's heaps of info on that forum site.

Note the Capo12 is a bugger to dismantle for servicing (especially if the mechanics don't know what they are doing)...... I recommend finding a mechanic that is familiar with Italian bikes (minimum) or works on Aprilia's...... they must exist, there are other Capo12's in Canberra, so someone knows what do do with them..... oh, nearly forgot..... no restrictions (that was all bullshit).... they just need the usual break in (easy throttle, getting heavier after 500kms, then with new oil.... full load). Just don't panic about new oil turning black (or clutch/brake fluid) prematurely.... it will settle.

Ps Capanord 1200 was discontinued way back in 2016....... it's really odd to find one with 300kms........ must be a Rally?
